Hello Saintyeti and welcome to our forum.

Have you tried plugging the laptop into an external monitor to see if it not just the screen at fault?

That would be your first step.

If the lines appear on the external monitor then it is likely that you laptop is suffering from the Nvidia defect.

Try that first and let me know and I will then help you further.

Worry not though; if your laptop is inherently defective then you have come to the right place.

Best wishes

Hello Saintyeti.

Ok, I am happy to help.

Firstly, I notice from your registration details that you purchased from a high street retailer.

Did you pay by credit card? If so, then you would also have a claim against them.

Here is what you need to do with the retailer.

1) Contact the store where you purchased the laptop. Tell them of the problems that you have had with your laptop and tell them that they are all directly related to the Nvidia Defect. Tell them that your laptop is inherently defective. Quote this website to them.

The store will probably tell you that you need to contact their head office.

2) Download a copy of the template letter which is available here.

Enter your details onto the letter and send it to the retailers head office.

Make sure that you send this by Recorded Delivery and keep a copy of the receipt.

3) They will then probably tell you that the onus is on you to prove that the laptop is inherently faulty. If they do then you will need to obtain an engineers report. Please let me know and I can arrange that for you.

Remember, the cost of the engineers report can be recovered from the retailer so you will not be out of pocket.

If they still fail to comply you will then need to file a small claims against them.

That is not as daunting as it may sound so don't worry because all the retailers we have presented reports to have never gone as far as court - and how could they? The laptop clearly breaches the SOGA and your statuatory rights.

Start with the above and see what their response is. If they are stubborn and still fail to comply after the above then the next step is issuing a small claims procedure against them.

I will help you with that should it come to it.

If you need any help or advice then please just ask.

Best wishes and good luck in your quest.

Paul

Hello Saintyeti

Ok, that is standard practive as the onus is on you to prove that your laptop is
inherently defective.

What you need is an engineers report which will do just that.

If you send me an email to paul@lapcure.com I will let you know what you need to do.

Remember, you can claim the cost of the engineers report back from the retailer.

Once they have the report you will find that things will move much quicker.

Best wishes

They cannot promise it won't happen again. Mine was repaired 3 times and still failed, they were replacing my motherboard with a motherboard that also had a faulty chip, as there is no way to tell between good and bad motherboards.

Precisely Urchin, that is exactly why people should say a resounding NO to a repair.

Consumers should also bear in mind that the warranty on the repair is generally only 3 months.

Furthermore, if you do allow the retailer to perform a repair that then prohibits you at a later date to ask for a refund.

The courts will say, and have in the past, that if you allow the retailer to repair the laptop and the laptop subsequently fails again then you can only have a further repair.

I think that rule is unfair, but then so is most of the Consumer Law.

So, to protect yourselves a refund or replacement is really the only answer.

Best wishes

Thanks for the report paul. So the next step is to send a letter off to pc world stating the problem and including the report.
Any help with how to word the letter?

Hello Saint,

Yes, I would send a covering letter with the report.

The letter should be along the following lines:-

Dear Sir/Madam

Please find herewith a copy of the independent engineers report that I have secured on the inherently defective laptop that I purchased from yourselves..

I now require that you provide me with either a replacement laptop or a refund.

If you do not comply in the positive within the next 14 days then I will have no option but to instigate a small claims procedure against your company. I will use the report plus numerous other pieces of evidence to support my claim.

I am sure you are aware of the problems the Nvidia defect is causing and the fact that it is affecting tens of thousand of laptops worldwide. With this in mind I hope that you would want to see a speedy and amicable solution to this matter.

In this matter time is of the essence and I look forward to your speedy response.

Yours faithfully

If your send that with a copy of the report I am sure things will move along pretty swiftly.

Best wishes

Paul
