Laptop Make: HP
Model: dv2699 special edition
Graphics Card: 8400M GS
Purchased From: High Street Store
Amount Paid: 800
Date Purchased: 01 Mar 2008
Date Failed: 16 Apr 2010
Can anyone help?

I bought an HP pavillion dv2500 (DV2699EA model number) from John Lewis in 2008 and at the start of April this year the graphics card failed and displayed only a blank screen. The backlight still seems to be working so it has to be the GPU that has failed. I spoke to a local computer technician who immediately advised of the HP graphics issue and suggested approaching the retailer for a refund. The retailer (JL) are denying that my model has the inherent graphics card flaw. Can anyone help me in locating information that can prove if my model is affected? What would i need to push the matter further with JL with regards to hard evidence? Do i need serial numbers of the GPU to prove its a defective model. A big thank you to anyone that can help.

Hello DudeUK and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing with your laptop.

Don't you just hate it when a retailer tells you a load of baloney in the hope that you will go away and not pursue a refund.

John Lewis really don't know what they are talking about when they say that your model is not affected.

I went on to the HP website and entered your details. I then went to the downloads section
and found this : http://tinyurl.com/37tdpc7

This is a BIOS update that HP released on the 8th April 2008 and it states on the HP Website:-

Quote:
Turns the system FAN on at the lowest speed, when the notebook is powered on.

Looking further into HP's website it also states:-

Quote:
The new BIOS release for your notebook PC is preventative in nature to reduce the likelihood of future system issues. The BIOS updates the fan control algorithm of the system, and turns the fan on at low volume while your notebook PC is operational. If you are currently experiencing any symptoms on your notebook PC, please contact HP for support.

This proves that as early as April 2008 HP knew of the potential for the future failure of your laptop.

Which proves that John Lewis really don't know what they are talking about when they say that your laptop is not defective.

How did you pay for the laptop?

If you paid by credit card then you have extra protection as the card company is jointly liable with the retailer.

Have you sent John Lewis anything in writing yet?

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul
