Hi there.

I purchased my G6065EA laptop direct from HP (on their website) approximately 3 years ago so it out of warranty.

About a week ago, my laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 froze whilst installing Windows Updates and I had to power it off by holding down the power button for 5 seconds.

When I tried to power it back on, firstly it refused to go past the POST test. I then when into the diagnostics and performed a memory test. This passed without any errors and to my surprise, I was then able to boot into Windows. I shut down the laptop and did not use it till the following day.

When I turned my laptop on the following day, I was able to boot into Windows but within about 2 minutes of use, it froze again and I had to power off by holding down the power switch.
However, when I attempted to turn the laptop back on this time, it was failing. The fans would start for about a second and the power and hdd lights on the laptop come on but then go off again.

I was pretty sure that the battery has a full charge but I left it on charge until the battery / ac power light (middle one) went out - still no luck.

I have tried booting after removing the battery and just plugging into the ac mains but still no luck.

I have also tried performing a hard reset, removing the battery for 15 - 20 minutes then tried booting with and without the battery - still no luck.

My findings on google lead me to believe it is the case that the GPU chip has overheated.

I have found a potential fix for this problem here: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-H ... 754/page/3

I thought I may as well attempt to fix it as HP would charge me a lot to fix the issue (if it is repairable) and that this money could go towards a new laptop if I cannot get the laptop to work again.

Currently I have stripped the laptop down as far as the main board I think, but I am unable to locate the GPU.

Can anyone confirm that this is the NVIDIA defect and help me locate the GPU so I can attempt a fix.

I presume now I have attempted a fix myself that a part refund or replacement laptop must be out of the question?

Thanks

Hello Kevin and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

The problem you describe with the lights coming on then going off again "could" be cause by the Nvidia defect.

Are you sure you want to try and repair it yourself?

You would be much better off pursuing HP for a refund as the repair that you will do will no doubt fail again in the near future.

Can you prove purchase and how did you pay?

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul

I can provide proof of purchase as I still have the invoice and packing slip which were included in the delivery of the laptop.

This invoice also confirms a payment by debit card

Hello Kevin,

In that case if I were you I would pursue HP for a refund.

If your laptop is indeed inherently defective then you really cannot lose.

I would start off by giving HP a call and telling them that your laptop has failed due to an inherent defect in the Nvidia GPU.

They will probably tell you that you are out of warranty and that any repairs will be chargeable.

I would then tell them that the warranty status is irrelevant as you have six years under the Sale Of Goods Act in which to take action against them when the goods in question are inherently defective.

HP are not the easiest company to deal with regarding this problem and some of the customer service personnel are most unhelpful to the point of being downright rude, but stick with it and you will win.

I know I keep saying this but persistence really is the key to success.

There is a step by step guide on this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you follow my advice in that guide then you will be successful.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

I have now drafted an explanation to send to HP about my laptop being faulty.

Where is the best place to send this to, either via an email or a written letter?

Hello Kevin,

When you say you have drafted a letter is this a letter before action?

If not then this really should be the letter you send. You can explain about the problems with your laptop in that but as long as the letter is entitled "Letter Before Action".

There is a template available in the downloads section of this forum and that is here:- download/letter_before_action.doc

Then you should send the letter to the following address:-

Hewlett-Packard Ltd
Amen Corner
Cain Road
Bracknell
Berkshire
RG12 1HN

Please ensure that you send the letter via recorded delivery and please keep a copy of the letter and postal receipt.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes
