Bought my Sony FZ11Z (With Nvidia 8400 GT GPU) back in October 2007, or rather I got it from an insurance company after my previous laptop was nicked.

After reading this forum (briefly - I probably should've paid more attention) I contacted Sony last week when I started getting artifacts on the screen, and Sony have agreed to fix it for free.

They are replacing the motherboard. I didn't get details of what the replacement will be. :b

Judging by what I've read on this forum since, I shouldn't have accepted the repair without a guarantee that this new motherboard would be free from fault - If the motherboard fails again (in, say, another year or two) what rights do I have with regard to getting a replacement ? Will this strengthen my case, or is my case diminished by the fact I've accepted a repair ?

Also, I can't find the downloads section on this forum, could anyone provide a link (I'm probably being thick).

I will install and test using the test software I've seen mentioned, once my laptop is back in my posession.

One last thing - this forum is fecking awesome! A truly brilliantly selfless act which goes way beyond merely beng helpful - many, many thanks to all who administer it!

Hello Steve,

Well done on your success :! :! :! :!

If your laptop does fail again with the Nvidia defect then you would have a very good case to pursue a claim again against Sony so no problems there.

The downloads section of the forum can be found here:- downloads.html and the specific utilities that you need can be found here:- tools-to-test-to-see-if-your-nvidia-gpu-is-about-to-fail-t57.html

Thank you very much for your kind words in your post, it is much appreciated.

Fingers crossed that the repair lasts and that you do not have a repeat of the defect. :x

Good luck and best wishes

Another couple of questions:-

I've received the laptop back and it has simply had a replacement motherboard/chipset of the same type installed.

It works, but I'm obviously concerned that it'll fail again at some point.

I've run the test tools, and the GPU seems to be running at about 59C when idle, I left the graphic utility running for an hour and I got temperatures of upto 77C.

Just wondered - how long should I realistically be leaving this test running ? Will it top-out after a time, or just keep creeping up ? Also,do the figures I've already got seem to indicate that the problem still exists ? I would hazard a guess that they do.

Cheers,

SteveBloke

Hello Steve,

The temp of 77c is a little high, but not overly high so at this stage it would be difficult for you to launch a claim as there is no evidence that the replacement board is defective.

If you leave it running for about fifteen to twenty minutes then that should be fine.

If you really want to put the GPU under stress then you should download a program called Furmark. This is a GPU bench testing program and is quite intensive. The program can be downloaded from here:- http://majorgeeks.com/FurMark_d4183.html

Run that for about thirty minutes then please pop back here and let me know the peak temperature and I will advise further.

Best wishes
