Help !!

My mum's HP 6000 has ceased to work, perminent black screen.

THe Laptop was purchased approx 2 years ago and I suspect the Graphics card has gone down and reading this forum it seems pretty common ??

The serial number of her machine is CNF 74 55 DD1 - can anyone confirm if this serial number is within the effected batch numbers ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated by my 72 year old mum.

Cheers

Russ

Hello Russ and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your mum's laptop has failed.

The serial number that you have provided shows that your laptop was manufactured in China n week 45 of 2007, slap bang when all the defective GPU's were being used.

Please could you let me know the P/N from the white barcode label on the underside of the laptop and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul

Hello Russ,

Thanks for that information.

Your mum's laptop contains an Nvidia 6100 GPU (GPU REV NF-G6100-N-A2) which whilst not one of the more prolific of the defective GPU's is still failing due to the defect.

I have a few more questions to see if I can help.

1) Exactly what problems is your mum experiencing with the laptop?
2) Who was the laptop purchased from?
3) How did you pay for the laptop (Credit Card/Debit Card/Cash)?
4) Do you have the receipt?
5) If you don't have the receipt and it was paid by credit/debit card then do you have the relevant statement?

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul,

I can confirm the following:

1) Exactly what problems is your mum experiencing with the laptop? - Powers on (all lights) but no Screen, in addition the in built wireless has never worked and has to be used via a dongle.

2) Who was the laptop purchased from? Staples

3) How did you pay for the laptop (Credit Card/Debit Card/Cash)? I think she paid via card.

4) Do you have the receipt? Yes

5) If you don't have the receipt and it was paid by credit/debit card then do you have the relevant statement? N/A

Cheers

Russ

Hello Russ,

The problems you describe are manifestations of the defect so it could well be that your laptop is indeed inherently defective.

Of course, I am unable to state categorically at this stage that it is definitely the defect because only an examination would be able to determine that.

The good news is that you purchased from Staples. Unlike some of the other retailers they will not give you the run-around.

It is also good news that you have your receipt as that means you are ready to start your claim.

I am going to give you the same advice below that I give everyone who are starting out on a claim.

Staples may not give the responses that I mention below but I will tell you anyway just in case you speak to an inexperienced member of staff.

You should now contact Staples and should tell them that your laptop has failed due to what you believe to be an inherent defect in the Nvidia GPU.

They may tell you that your laptop is out of warranty and that there is nothing that they can do. You should tell them that the warranty status is irrelevant as you have six years from the date of purchase in which to bring an action against a retailer when the goods in question are inherently defective.

They may then tell you to contact HP. You should tell them that you purchased from Staples and not from HP so it is entirely Staples responsibility to resolve the situation.

They will then probably ask you to provide an engineers report. If an when they do please let me know as that is a service which we provide.

There is a step by step guide on this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you follow my advice in that guide then you will be successful.

I hope the above helps.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hello Russ,

Thank you for your kind words, much appreciated.

I would contact Staples Head Office direct as the store will direct you there anyway and you will save some time.

Good luck and if you need any help then please let me know.

Hello Corkman and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

You will need some form of proof of purchase in order to be able to continue your claim against the retailer.

Why not get in touch with Soundstore and see if they will provide you with a copy invoice. Tell them it is for insurance purposes or something. If they do provide you with a receipt then great, you will be able to commence with your claim.

Without it I am afraid that your options are very limited.

So, your first step is give the retailer a call tomorrow and see if they are willing to provide you with a copy invoice. Be nice and polite to them because if you come across as being rude or angry then they may be disinclined to help.

Once you have done that please pop back here and let me know the outcome and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul
