Hi there everyone
My name is Jamie Barclay and I have a new problem with my dv9820ea. I believe the problem is the notorious nvidia chip fault. The laptop doesnt boot, all leds are on but nothing on the screen. There are no 3 beeps that you normally get with this fault. The chip in question is the Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS. In the past I have a lot of dealings with repairing the dv range of laptops and hopefully I can offer any advise to the forum in return. I would say about 90% of the were the faulty graphics card. This is the reason Im seeking some advise. I cant believe that a company like HP would only offer a 1 year warranty on a piece of hardware that costs so much and I dont see why the consumer has to dip into their pockets to fix someone elses ongoing problem.
Anyway, rant over The laptop was purchased at Amazon.co.uk on August 2008, therefor the warranty has expired. The laptop was purchased using a credit card so I believe that if I get no satisfaction from Amazon then I can claim using the card. I would be grateful as to how I go about this.
Thanks in advance
Jamie

Hello Jamie and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing with your laptop.

You do not always get 3 beeps when the GPU fails, it all depends on how many solder bumps have failed.

The fact that you are out of warranty does not matter as you have SIX YEARS to take action against a retailer when the goods in question are inherently defective.

The fact that you paid by credit card is also good news as you can claim for a Section 75 refund.

Full step by step details on how to obtain a refund can be found here:- post13.html#p13

There is also a letter that you can send to the credit card company should Amazon fail to comply with their obligations under the Sale Of Goods Act and that is here:- Letter_to_CC-2.pdf

Don't let them try and fob you off Jamie. They may tell you that you are out of warranty. This is rubbish as your laptop is inherently defective. They may tell you to go to HP. Again, this is rubbish as you purchased fro Amazon and it is they that are 100% responsible to you for the failure.

They will, at some point, as you to provide an engineers report.

We have had tremendous success against most of the high street retailers when the customer has presented them with a copy of our engineers report. Further details can be found here:- need-an-independant-engineers-report-t62.html

Don't let Amazon try and tell you any different Jamie, if your laptop is indeed inherently defective then you really cannot lose.

If you need any help or guidance along the way then please let me know.

Please keep us updated on your progress.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hi all, just a quick update with Amazon. I have been at them now for over 2 weeks and they show no signs of budging on this one. They are most adament that they are not responsible and keep returning us to HP Customer Services. They as you know will not entertain you after the 12 months warranty runs out. I will keep fighting the good fight and update when I hear anything new.

Hello Jamie,

I am sorry to hear that you are no further forward with Amazon.

I would send them a letter before action and if they fail to comply I would pop on over to www.moneyclim.gov.uk and file a small claims action against them.

They should know that the warranty status is irrelevant as this is given to you by the manufacturer and is on top of your statutory rights and your rights under the Sale Of Goods Act and they should also know that you have SIX YEARS to take action against them if a product turns out to be inherently defective.

Give them one last chance to settle and then move on to the next step.

Good luck and as always, if you need any help or advice then please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul
