My Comet bought HP DV9574EA failed a few months ago and I've only just come across this site about the fault being a common issue and wanted to get the expert advice of the people here about what to do.

I bought the laptop in November 2007 and have changed address 3 times since (the joys of university) so have no idea where I stand with regards getting the issue fixed. Especially since during this time the recipt has gone missing but the purchase is still shown on my online banking although it isn't item specific.

From my brief scan of the forum it does seem like the typical GPU failure, losing of wireless connectivity (which I was able to get back somehow) during '09 and the display issues happening as of February this year. Luckily having another laptop meant I wasn't hampered too much by it and why it's taken so long to get round to this.

If those who know their stuff can tell me what I need to do, and/or what more information is required I would be very grateful.

Rob

Hello Rob and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

The fact that you have changed address three times will in no way hamper or hinder your claim. People change address - it is a fact of life and it is not something that Comet can hold against you.

As long as you know the address where you purchased the laptop then that is all that matters. You can contact Comet and ask for a copy receipt. Comet's computer system allows them to enter a postcode and see all the transactions and sales made to that address so they cannot claim that they are not able to do this as they have provided copy receipts many times in the past.

You mentioned display issues in your post and you also stated that you had wireless issues which had been resolved. It is unusual that the wireless has started working again as this does not usually happen. Once the wireless has failed that is it until a rework has been performed.

Please could you let me know exactly what display issues you are having so that I can determine if this is a GPU problem or if it is a problem caused by something else.

Best wishes

I managed to get the laptop to boot this morning, but after installing an academic copy of Windows 7, hoping that would cure the problem, upon restarting it once again booted in 16bit display mode and refused to accept that the laptop had anything but a Standard VGA Adapter. Installing a new copy of the most uptodate 8600M drivers it once again fixed until restarting when it again booted in 16bit mode and showed a Standard VGA Adapter.

Its really confusing as it only seems to revert to 16bit when the computer has brought itself up to a stable temperature, starting from cold allows it to boot normally. :c

At the moment it's running in 16bit, showing the correct device (GeForce 8600M GS) but says it is stopped because of Code 43

Hello Rob,

Judging by what you have said I would say that your laptop is on the fringes of failure though hasn't quite met its doom.

The Code 43 is an indication that the fault lies squarely with the Nvidia GPU as does the reverting to 16 bit when the laptop is rebooted.

Have you tried to run the 2 utilities from the downloads section of the forum?

These will tell you the temperature of the GPU both at idle and under load.

Instructions and the files can be found here:- tools-to-test-to-see-if-your-nvidia-gpu-is-about-to-fail-t57.html

Please run those two files, make a not of the temperatures, then pop back here and let me know and I will advise further.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Downloaded and run both programs on both of my laptops (just to see how they compare) I can't find anywhere that shows temperature on either and rthdribl.exe wont run on either saying that d3dx9_35.dll is missing :c

Hello Rob,

You will need to install DirectX which can be found here:- http://tinyurl.com/35gv4fn

The temperature gauge can be found if you click on the sensors tab in GPU-Z.

If there is no temperature gauge then that means the graphics drivers are not loaded and the laptop is working in standard VGA mode.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

There is no temperature gauge in sensors, just GPU Core Clock and GPU Memory Clock.

Hello Rob,

Are you sure the drivers are loaded for the video card?

On the first tab in GPU-Z it will tell you what GPU drivers are loaded. What does it say?

Best wishes

Hello Rob,

Well it sounds like the incorrect drivers are loaded or not the drivers that were provided by HP.

I would advise re-installing the drivers that came with your laptop. These can be downloaded here:- http://tinyurl.com/3lepn9n

It is quite common that there can be a problem communicating with the thermal diode in the GPU if the wrong drivers are used.

Try re-installing to see if that makes a difference.

Best wishes
