Hi, I bought the above laptop from Comet just over two years ago, last week the wireless internet stopped working. Reading this forum it sounds like this maybe the start of things to come. Can anyone tell me if this model is indeed affected by the dodgy Nvidia chipset.

Hello Rich1e and welcome to our forum.

When you state that the wireless stopped working does the little switch on the front of the laptop remain orange?

Is the wireless adaptor visible in the Device manager?

The loss of wireless is one of the first manifestations of the defect followed closely by complete failure of the laptop.

The fact that your laptop contains an Nvidia 8600 GPU, which is one of the more prolific of the defective GPU's coupled with the problems you are experiencing leads me to believe that your laptop is indeed inherently defective.

Please let me know the answers to the two questions and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Hi, thanks for the welcome.

the wireless light does turn blue when switched on and the Atheros wireless adapter is visible in device manager.

Just to add, over the last 12 months the laptop would intermittently goto a blue screen, this happens approx once a month.

cheers.

Hello Rich1e,

The fact that the wireless LED is blue and the wireless card is visible in the device manager leads me to believe that this is not actually a manifestation of the defect.

Have you tried removing and re-installing the wireless drivers?

When you say you get a blue screen crash, does the blue screen stay on for long enough for you document the reason for the crash?

Have you tried running Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware programs to ensure that you laptop is free from such infections?

When you say it crashes about once a month, that is not very often and does not lead me to believe that this is a hardware problem but more of a software issue.

I would try the above and if that fails then I would backup your data and try a system restore to see if that resolves your wireless and blue screen issues.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Yes, I have done all of the above including taking Vista off an installing Windows 7.

It does come up with an error message with the blue screen, cant remember exactly what it says but its along the lines of bad_pool_caller.

Hello Rich1e

The "bad_pool_caller" message that you are receiving could be related to memory.

One thing that you could try is to remove one of the sticks of RAM and see if you get the message. If you do, swap the RAM over and run it with the other stick.

See if that resolves the problem. If it does then you know that one of the sticks of RAM is faulty.

Alternatively download Memtest and create a bootable CD that you should then run to test the memory. That can be found here:- http://www.memtest86.com/

Regarding the wireless, if you do a search for connections does it actually find any? When it did work did it find any other than yours? If yours was the only one it would normally find then the problem could be with the router. You should try turning it off and then back on again in order to reset it.

Please give the above a go and let me know the results and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Hi

I have replaced the RAM before as a friend also said that could be the cause. The wireless does pick up more than just my own router. It is definitely the wireless card at fault as it works fine hard wired and also my works laptop is unaffected.

cheers.

Hello Rich1e,

So when you say you are having wireless problems what exactly is the problem?

Does the laptop actually connect to the router?

Does it let you enter the WEP/WPA key?

If so does it then connect but not let you access any web pages or do you get an exclamation mark on the wireless icon?

Please let me know.

Best wishes

Hello Rich1e,

If the wireless card was faulty then you would find that it wouldn't connect or would drop the connection.

The fact that it connects but is running slow would lead me to believe that the router could be at fault.

In order to discount the router have you the opportunity to take your laptop to another site and connect to that router?

If you haven't done that yet then it may be worth trying. If the internet works normally then you know that your router is the source of the problem.

Whilst I appreciate that the internet may work correctly when hard-wired to the laptop this does not mean that the same will happen when connecting via wireless.

The best test is to try the laptop elsewhere and then we will know for sure.

I hope the above helps.

Best wishes
