I purchased a dv2188 (RR098EA) back in January 2007 directly from the HP Store. I paid nearly £700 as I wanted a fast processor and expected the unit to last many years.

I've only used it as a second computer, preferring my desktop as the main computing workhorse, so despite it being 3 years old, it has had a very easy life.

In August I got the dreaded blank screen and 3 beeps of death. I've only recently looked at doing something about it, rummaging round the HP website. Of course, there is no explanation of what 3 beeps on power-up means, and they want £16 for an out-of-warranty tech support conversation. They're approved repairer quoted £280 as the set fee for laptop repairs, which seemed excessive. It was only after posting on the HP support forums did it become apparent this was a common fault.

So I am about to start the lengthy correspondence process with the retailer, HP direct.

Any tips/info greatly appreciated!

Hellp APJ and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems with your laptop.

The three beeps that you can hear is the POST error code which signifies a faulty video.

Sorry to say that your laptop, like so many others, has the dreaded defect.

I would now send HP a letter before action. This gives them seven days to comply with their obligations. A template letter before action can be found here:- download/letter_before_action.doc

You should download the letter, edit it with your details and send it to HP's head office. The address can be found on the retailers contact page in this forum.

You should send the letter via recorded delivery and please remember to keep a copy of the letter and postal receipt.

If they have failed to respond after seven days then you should proceed with an engineers report to prove the inherent defectiveness of your laptop.

There is a step by step guide on this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you follow my advice in that guide then you will be successful.

Please keep us updated on your progress.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Paul - many thanks for the step-by-step instructions! Will follow and fingers crossed.

Was dismayed when the laptop broke, but at least this is a possible solution
