Hi all,

I've had problems with my M1530 on and off since I bought it at the tail-end of 2008. Excessive heat has obviously been the biggest thing, but I've never gotten around to getting it sorted, and until today knew nothing about the 'Nvidia defect'.

Howeverm, my screen has now stopped working. The lights flash as they should, all the hardware makes the expected noises, and I can even hear Windows initiating, but nothing whatsoever on the screen.

My question is: is this the Nvidia defect, or do I have another, unrelated problem?

Cheers,

Tom

Hello Tom and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

The problems you describe are all manifestations of the defect. Coupled with the fact that your laptop contains one of the more prolific of the defective GPU's, the 8600, then I would say that it is highly likely that your laptop is indeed inherently defective.

Furthermore, your model of laptop has been recognised by Dell as being inherently defective and that can be found here:- http://nvidiasettlement.com/affectedmodels.html

There is a step by step guide on this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you follow my advice in that guide then you will be successful.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hi Tom,

As Paul says it sounds quite like it could be the Nvidia defect, do you get any strange bits on the screen whilst it's booting?

Tom

Hi guys,

Thanks very much for the replies. I actually had nothing on the screen at all, almost like it was disconnected.

I managed to take a shortcut up to one of the escalation teams at Dell, and I let them talk me into a repair when they assured me that the the whole motherboard, heat-sink and fan would be replaced free of charge, and that if there were problems afterwards they would deal with it further.

The repair actually took place today. I've run the stress test and am getting maximum temperatures of 80 degrees and an average of 76 degrees over a 45 minute run. Instinct tells me that's better than before, but does it sound normal/safe to you?

Thanks,

Tom

Hello Tom,

Well 70 degrees sounds good but 80 degrees is a little high.

I would keep your eye on those temperatures over the coming months and if they start to climb then it could be a sign of impending doom.

Fingers crossed they stay as they are.

Well done on your success, at least you are not left with an expensive doorstop. :! :! :! :!

Good luck and best wishes for the future.
