Laptop Make: Dell
Model: XPS m1530
Graphics Card: 8600M GS
Purchased From: Direct From Manufacturer
Amount Paid: 700
Date Purchased: 01 Jan 2008
Date Failed: 16 Aug 2011
Hi all,

My trusty (until now) XPS m1530 (with 8600m GT 256mb Graphics card) stopped working tonight - when I power on, the lights come on but the screen is dead. When I do a diagnostics test, I get one flashing light then two solid lights - this points to the motherboard, and I'm assuming the GPU in particular.

Luckily I found this site, so I'm going to start the ball rolling with Dell to get a refund/replacement.

Is there any point ringing tech support, or should I just fire off a letter to their UK head office? In my experience, the Dell tech support is off-shore in India, and they aren't particularly good at listening/helping...

Cheers.

PS I'll update this thread as things progress.

Hello Finster and welcome to our forum.

I wouldn't bother ringing their tech support as members have reported that they found that ineffectual.

Instead you should write to their head office which is:-

DELL Corporation Limited
Dell House
The Boulevard
Cain Road
Bracknell
Berkshire
RG12 1LF

Please ensure that your letters go by recorded delivery and that you keep copies of the letter and postal receipt.

Good luck with your claim and if you need any help along the way then please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Good luck. Mine failed for the second time after the free repair Dell offered. I am currently trying to get them to give me a new laptop or my money back.

Just a quick update on this - no response from Dell yet (I sent the letter on 17th Aug!), so I've sent the laptop to Lapcure today for a hardware report.....

Hello Finster,

How long does it take them to open the mail, assign it to one of their customer service personnel and then respond to you? It is, in my opinion, the height of unprofessionalism to allow your customers communications to go unanswered for such a long period of time.

I will update you as soon as I receive your laptop and thank you for your custom.

Best wishes

Just a quick update - got my laptop back yesterday and the engineer's report did indeed confirm the nvidia defect.

I've sent my second letter to Dell today with a copy of the report/invoice (I still haven't heard back from the first letter that I sent on 17th Aug!).

Let's see what happens...

Hello Finster,

Well, if Dell treat you in the same way that they have treated some of the other members of this forum then you will probably be offered a repair that comes with a measly 90 day warranty and the parts will not be guaranteed to be free from the defect. The parts will also be refurbished, though we have yet to get clarification as to exactly what that means.

I could, of course, be wrong so let's see what they say.

Good luck and fingers crossed for you. :x

Best wishes

No reply AT ALL from Dell (they signed for my second letter with the engineer's report on 9th Sept). Their 7 business days is nearly up so I'm planning what to do next.

I originally purchased the laptop on an Alliance & Leicester (now MBNA) credit card, so is it worth pursuing a Section 75 refund? I'm assuming its better to write a letter than ring their call centre?

Cheers.

Hello Finster,

I would indeed now contact the credit card company and would tell them that Dell have been totally unresponsive to your claim and that you are now left with no option but to pursue a Section 75 refund.

I would ring their call centre in the first instance to see if you can cut through a lot of the red tape.

If they refuse to comply on the phone then you should send them the letter.

Please ensure that you keep a coy of the letter and the postal receipt.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes
