Hi,
My 1400 has started to show signs of the 8400 GS heat issue.

I was not aware of this issue before this weekend and only found out due to Googling my symptons.

In 2009 I flashed my BIOS with the update, unaware that it was due to the NVIDIA issue. This, although in principle has worked, has only delayed the fault and, convieniently for Dell, has now occured after the additional one year warranty.

My question is this, I'm a dab hand with a soldering iron. Although I know that the chip is soldered onto the motherboard, do you think that by gently heating the pins for a couple of seconds each it will fix the dry solder joints?

Or do you think that I may have any luck with Dell? I can't find anyone who has had a free repair when there unit is passed the warranty date.

Kind regards,

Mike.

Hello Mike and welcome to out forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

You cannot resolve this problem with a soldering iron as the interconnect points are on the underside of the GPU and so are inaccessible. You can use a rework tool, which produces hot air, to temporarily resolve the problem though this is not a permanent fix.

If you were to pursue Dell and if your laptop is indeed inherently defective then you have every chance of a success.

I have a couple of questions to ask to see if I can help further.

1) Did you purchase the laptop in the UK?
2) How did you pay (Debit/Credit Card)?

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul,

Yes I bought the laptop via the UK Dell online store. I paid for it, I think with my credit card, would have to check as I don't think I have that particular card anymore.

I've been reading this forum all day and can see that some people have 'won' cases with Dell via the small claims court or have been offered a repair.

Kind regards,

Mike.

Paul,

Just checked and I paid for the Dell using my Sky Credit Card, which I cancelled about a year ago.

I believe the card was run by Barclaycard.

Would I still be able to claim a section 75 with Barclaycard even though I no longer have a card with them?

Thanks for your help,

Mike.

Hello Mike,

Excellent news that you paid by credit card as this means the card company is jointly and severally liable with the retailer.

It does not matter that you do not still have the card and you can still make a Section 75 claim against the card company.

You will need to pursue Dell first and then, if Dell fail to offer a resolution, you can pursue the card company. They will want to see copies of all communications with Dell so please ensure that you keep copies of all emails.

Try also to keep all communications by email and avoid calling them as you will not have any evidence of what is discussed.

Dell have actually admitted to the defect in your model of laptop and it is included in the recent successful class action in the states. Evidence of this can be found here:- http://nvidiasettlement.com/pdfs/NVF_NOT.pdf

Dell will probably try and fob you off but you should stand your ground as you are in the right and they are in the wrong and the law is on your side.

There is a step by step guide on this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you follow my advice in that guide then you will be successful.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hello Mike
I have a Vostro 1710, and a little further on in my claim. I have kept everything with Dell in writing, I wrote to Dell Inc at Bracknell, Berks, by recorded delivery, they passed the letter to Dell India who telephoned me to offer a repair, but I asked them to put it into writing, so we conversed by email. They didn't really offer me anything worth having, (my list posts are under Vostro 1710), I also wrote by email to Dell CEO, he didn't reply but sent my email to India, but I have all these in writing. Trying for Section 75 at the moment. Will help you if I can
regards
Jaljo.

Another quick question.

I noticed on my email receipt from when I bought the unit that it states 'Dell Business'.

Now I'm not a business and bought the laptop through a link on 'Hot deals UK' where I saw the offer.

Having Googled the NVIDIA problem to death, several forum postings suggest that if I bought the laptop from the business side of Dell then all my consumer rights are waived. So, would I still be able to put a claim in with Barclaycard for a Section 75 refund or take Dell to the small claims court?

Thanks for all your ongoing help & support,

Mike.

Hello Mike,

It is true that if you purchased the laptop in the course of your business then you are not covered by the Sale Of Goods Act.

However, as you have stated you are not a business but a consumer and so just because it states Dell Business on the receipt does not mean that this is a business sale.

I take it that when you completed the online details you simply entered your own name and address?

I note that you also paid by personal credit card which further enhances your claim.

Do you still have a copy of the terms and conditions of sale from when you purchased the laptop?

The good news is that you can still pursue a Section 75 refund from the card company as the card is a personal card and not a business one and there is no evidence to the contrary.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Hello
Bought my Vostro business laptop direct from Dell, I am a home user - no business. Checked my Order Confirmation, no company name is listed, I had entered Not Applicable, and then my name and address.

When Dell offered me the repair (which I have not taken up) they didn't question "my status." Under Section 75 my Credit Card company has accepted they are satisfied that I appear to have the basis for a claim, the amount they have offered though is very low, still corresponding with them.

Just noticed the address on Dell order confirmation is Dell Products, Dublin, though I wrote to the Bracknell Berks address.

Regards
Jaljo

No, there is nothing in the company name section, I just entered my name and address.

The PC came from Dublin too, but I'll try and pursue a section 75 with Barclaycard.

Had no reply from Dell yet, will give them until the end of next week.

The PC died properly last night, have now just got a blank screen when I turn the unit on. I'm currently using my old clunky desktop PC which hasn't seen any action for the last 3 years, it was like a trusty old friend when I turned it on last night!

Thanks again, Mike.
