Hi

I am new to this game so not really sure what I am doing!!! Bought a compaq laptop from curry's in May 2007 which worked fine up to a couple of months ago when I started having problems with my wireless conection. The about a month ago screen went blank and that was that.

Went to PC world who offered to look at it for £229 which i declined. Luckly my sister knew of somebody who ran a little independant buisness fixing computers. I went to see him and although he was not able to fix it he did manage to retrieve all my photos. He sent the computer off to a company he deals with for repairs that he is unable to do himself and they have identified a failure of the graphics chip (nvidia) and has made the computer economically unrepairable. I have spoken to the person I took the computer to and he has said that the company he sent the computer to will do me a report although there will be a charge of £65 for this service. He recomended that I google Nvidia Laptop defects and this has led me to this site.

Any advice on how to proceed next?

Paul

Hello Paul and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you have been experiencing with your laptop.

I did a check on the HP website for your laptop and found this:- http://tinyurl.com/26wrhdx

This is the BIOS update page for your laptop and the purpose of the update is, according to HP, :-

Quote:
Updates the fan control algorithm of the system to reduce the likelihood of future system issues.

This update was released on 14th December 2007 and is marked as CRITICAL.

Why didn't HP tell you whilst you were still under warranty that there was a potential for your laptop to overheat and then subsequently fail?

The above piece of evidence will be instrumental in helping you reach a positive resolution from the retailer.

How scandalous for PC World to want to charge £229 just to look at it!

There is a step by step guide on this forum that will help you receive either a refund (partial or otherwise) or a replacement laptop and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you follow my advice in that guide then you will reach a positive resolution.

When you are ready to proceed with an engineers report then please take a look here for more information:- need-an-independant-engineers-report-t62.html

I hope the above helps.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

As a matter of interest, which computer company was it that told you to Google Nvidia Laptop defects?

Best wishes

Paul

Hi

I have been into curry's thismprning spoke to a lady on customer services who was very nice but no use at all. She said as it was a technical issue and my laptop is out of warranty I should contact head office and gave me their contact details. Should I try to speak to some one first or go straight for a letter?

I would go straight to the letter before action as you will probably be wasting your time calling them.

Please don't forget to send the letter via recorded delivery and keep a copy of the letter and postal receipt.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Best wishes

Hi Paul

Just thought I would give you an update. As you dvised I sent 7 day letter to curry's and have received a reply from currys customer resolution team. They asked me to take my laptop into my local pcworld last week so they could investigate the problem.

Today I received another call and was told the problem has been identified as a problem with charging unit on the motherboard which they have said is not economic to repair. They have however offered me a contribution of £160 towards a new computer based on the price I paid and the age of the laptop.

This has made me a little suspicious, if the problem is not a result of the nvidia defect why are they offering me a contribution towards a new one are they just trying to fob me off. The second issue is what is a fair offer of compensation I must admit £160 seems low to me.

Hello Cardy,

Well, I do find it suspicious that they have identified the fault as being connected with the charging unit on the motherboard. I would have expected Westerman Computers to have identified this at the time.

Were there any LED's when you switched the laptop on? Did the charging LED illuminate when you connected the charger?

To be honest though their offer of £160 is in line with what one would expect given the purchase date, the failure date and the purchase price.

Even if you were to proceed to court you may not get more.

I would be inclined to accept their offer and would then draw a line under the matter.

At least you have had a pain free resolution.

What do you think?

Best wishes

Hi Paul

Thank you for your thoughts. To be honest I dont believe what they re saying is wrong with the computer is true, however as you say even if I went to court I may not get anymore money and this will take even more time stuck with just this borrowed old computer which is so slow it is driving me mad. I have therefor reluctantly decided to acept their offer and as you say I can draw a line under the matter.

I would like to tak this opportunity to thank you for your help and I ish you the best in your future campains against these companies.

Cardy

Hello Cardy,

Well done on your success :! :! :! :!

I am pleased that you have managed to reach a resolution even though they claim that the problem was caused by something else.

Thank you for your kind words, much appreciated.

Good luck to you also and I hope your next laptop gives you better service.

Best wishes

Paul
