i bought a acer laptop from comet back in 2008 plus bought extended warranty, in feburary 2009 my hard drive failed was sent back to acer it was fixed sent back working fine! then in april 2009 the same thing happened again. it was then taken away back to acer come back fixed and working again. the hard yet again failed!! on the 5/9/2010 i phoned up my insurance and comet had it arranged to be fixed again, prevouise times it was sent away to acer now comet had changed things as a cheaper way to save comet money. i then got a phone call to go and pick it up i took it home had a look at it switched it on comes up with operating system failed. as i am a total push over i got my dad to ring up comet they said i had to buy a recovery disc that costs £50, i bought the disc tryed it doesnt work reading up on fourms that people have had problems with it the disc does not work either!. he then phoned up the insurance they give him another job number to be repaired again and that they should off fix it to the point of it working. after going round in circles hours on the phone comet said they wount fix it!

me and my dad are totally discussed how we have been treated and the quailty of the repair i now have a none working, lifeless box of nothing that's covered under insurance that comet are not pre-pared to fix. i do not now what to do next :( Heeelp please.

Hello Cookie and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of all the problems you have been experiencing with your laptop.

Firstly, I would say that the problems you have been experiencing could be related to the Nvidia defect and hard drive failures are one of the manifestations due to the heat being generated.

If you have an Extended Warranty then Comet cannot refuse to repair it as they are obligated under contract to do so.

It is now time to ratch things up a little with Comet.

I would contact them and tell them that you believe your laptop is inherently defective and that you believe that all the hard drive failures are related to the GPU.

Have you noticed your laptop getting hot? Have you experienced any graphical glitches?

Comet are the kings at fobbing their customers off so you should expect this from them but don't worry because we will help you reach a positive resolution.

Tell them that you now want a replacement laptop or a refund as you have no confidence in the laptop and after all the failures you believe it has an inherent defective.

They will tell you that you are out of warranty. You should tell them that you have six years to take action against a retailer when the goods in question are inherently defective.

They may then tell you to contact Acer. You should tell them that they alone are now responsible for resolving the situation.

You should further tell them that unless they comply with your wishes you will seek an engineers report and use that against them in the Small Claims court.

Be polite but persistent and please remember, persistence is the key to success.

Start off with the above, see what they say then pop back here and let me know and I will advise you further.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hello Cookie,

There is not a lot of advice I can offer at this stage as you will need to test the laptop once you get it back.

I would suggest you download the 2 utilities in the downloads section of this forum to test the temperatures that your laptop is reaching.

This will tell us how good the repair is and whether or not there is a potential for the board to fail.

The failure for them to reload your laptop could have been an oversight on their part and you have to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Let's see how it is when you get it back and I will then advise further.

Good luck and best wishes
