Hello Shawn.

Well, all seems to be going to plan.

It is excellent news that they have confirmed the fault to be caused by the GPU, they cannot wriggle out of that now.

You did the right thing with the email and the 2 clauses will ensure that you do not receive another lemon.

It does sound positive though as the lady you spoke to didn't say no outright.

Fingers crossed for you that you don't need to pursue this down the legal route which can be time consuming.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hey Paul,

Can I get your help in confirming that the replacement motherboard is (most likely not) free of the Nvidia defect. The part number they gave me for it was:

60-NLBMB1000-B04

Cheers,
Shawn

"Hello Shawn,

We are sorry that we cannot provide such written guarantee on company headed notepaper. Regarding to the new motherboard, it has same GPU chipset, but ASUS remakes these new motherboards for solving and preventing overheating to damage the chipset. Our technicians also have solved a lot of cases in terms of the VGA problem by replacement of such new motherboard. All the feedback from customers for such replacement is very good. Therefore, you do not need to worry about the new motherboard we will offer you.

If you do not want the replacement of the new motherboard, we will close your case and your notebook will be returned to you unrepaired.

Please let us know your decision as soon as possible. Thank you very much!

Best regards!

Eileen"

This is the email they sent me after I told them I wasn't willing to accept the replacement without a written guarantee.

At this point they're offering me a free replacement as if under warranty with a 90-day warranty on the replaced part.

Any suggestions?

Hello Shawn,

As much as I hate to say it but you are up against a wall with Asus and your only other option would be the legal route.

I think I am going to have to advise you to accept their offer of a free repair as I am unsure of the laws in your country and so unlike here in the UK where customers have rejected repairs and subsequently won in court, I cannot say that the same will be true in your case.

I would accept their offer and then keep my fingers crossed that they have indeed solved the problem.

What do you think?

Best wishes

Paul

So I have the same issue as mentioned here. Bought the laptop in 2007, had problems in 2009 and was fixed. However, it was said that it had been the motherboard that was the problem. Problems were ofc the blank screen and wifi. Now it happened again yesterday and im rly upset. Thought it was over but it seems (after reading this forum) that the problem covers all the GPU's(motherboard as the service announced), even those used to replace the broken ones. Now im gonna call Asus service here in Finland and hope for the best, cuz i cant buy a new one atm. Despite that the warranty has expired, i should get this repair/replacement through?

Thank you already, this forum has given some light in the end of the tunnel.

Well, repairs are fruitless as there does not seem to be any reliable parts available at this time.

I am seeing more and more of your model of laptop coming up as being defective yet Asus seem to be sticking their head in the sand over this and seem to be denying there is a problem.

Do you have any laws similar to the Sale Of Goods Act in your country?

I would suggest you seek some legal advice to see that action you can take. The problem with your laptop is a worldwide problem and so there really is no escaping for Asus.

I am sorry I am unable to assist you regarding your legal rights as I am unsure of the laws in your country.

Persistence is the key to success. Be firm but polite and do not give up. If Asus can fob you off then they will, so please don't let them.

Good luck in your quest and please keep us updated on your progress.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hello,

My G1s graphic card seems to have quit on me this October, like many of you. Am currently building up the whole dossier as to get a change from Asus as seen here above. I have no idea how swiss law will help me out in this.

Thank you for creating this forum an it's invaluable resource!

Wish me luck.

Hello Annales and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

Asus are, by all accounts, not the easiest company to deal with so you may be in for a bit of a battle with them, but as I always say, persistence is the key to success. Don't let them fob you off, stand your ground and you will succeed.

Ive tried to gather some information about the subject. First of all, my retailer refused to help and asked me to write about this to the asus service. There they said that they would repair my laptop with a cost from 400-500€ cause its out of warranty. We dont have any good laws in here that would get me legal backup in this case. The estimated lifetime of a laptop varies between 2 and 4 years(all cases are individual ones), thus my comp is only over 3 years old and it would take almost a year to get help from the council, as they are slow in action. Customer counsellor asked me to beg from the retailer for like half of the cost. This is getting ridiculous, there isnt even any parts available? If I send my laptop to the asus service and they cant get that missing part, would they suggest another laptop for me?
