Hi Paul!
Thank you very much for your advice. Could you explain exactly what a rework test is and would there be any point in taking the laptop to a different engineer for a rework test?

Hello The4thmenace,

A rework test involves heating the GPU with a tool that is similar to a hot air gun.

This causes the solder balls on both the underside of the GPU plus the solder that bonds the die to the substrate to melt and reflow.

This is a much better test because a side effect of the test is that the laptop will work again, albeit for a limited amount of time.

This test is more definitive and conclusive in its results.

If you would like us to help you with a report then please let me know.

I hope the above helps.

Best wishes

Paul

Dear Paul,
I'd be delighted to accept your offer of help with a report. At the moment, I'm in the process of composing a letter to PC World to find out why they haven't replied to my previous letter. Once again, thanks very much for all of your help.

Hi Paul,
Thanks very much for your reply. We're going to go ahead with the letter. We'll wait a week for their reply. We probably will need help to justify our complaint. As you say, the engineers report we have is inadequate to say the less. We would be very grateful if you would help us with your report. Thanks very much.

Dear Paul,
Just updating you about my laptop. After I got the engineers report and PC World saw the copy of the report, they phoned me (whilst mum was out) and said that they would not be considering my complaint that the graphics card was faulty and I would get no refund from them. This is a while ago. I don't know how to pursue the MATTER NOW!

I had been considering "The Small Claims Court," however! I feel that the report that I got from the engineers wouldn't really support my claims and that I feel that this has discouraged me from taking my case to "The Small Claims Court." I have been feeling very despondent about the whole situation.

What other alternatives could I condsider?

Hello The4thmenace,

Try not to be despondent because if you do then you run the risk of giving up on this and if you do then there will be only one winner and that is the retailer.

Please could you let me know the contents of your engineers report and I will advise further.

If you are forced into getting another engineers report then you will be able to recover the cost of BOTH reports from PC World.

Keep your chin up though, we will help you reach the resolution you deserve.

Best wishes

Paul

My engineers report just says. . .
"Asus G1s Laptop - After close inspection of the motherboard we have found cracks in the BGA solder for the nvidia graphics chip. The cause of this is most likely down to overheating as the heatsink and fan is very dusty which would limit the cooling capacity of the machine. The cost is to repair the machine."

Hello The4thmenace,

I can see why they have rejected your report as it does not prove conclusively the cause of the failure of your laptop.

I am not quite sure how they could state that "After close inspection of the motherboard we have found cracks in the BGA solder for the nvidia graphics chip.". The ONLY way to actually see the cracks in the BGA would be by using an electron microscope.

These pieces of apparatus are prohibitively expensive and I think that is it unlikely that they own one.

Just about he only test that is conclusive is the rework test. This involves heating up the GPU which caused the underlying solder balls to melt and reflow which in turn cause the laptop to work correctly again, albeit for an indeterminable amount of time. This proves conclusively the presence of the defect.

You are probably going to have to obtain another report which will stand up in court. If you would like us to provide you with such a report then please let me know and I will advise further.

You will be able to recover the cost of both reports as consequential losses.

If you have any questions then please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul
