Hello all,

A few days ago my G1S decided to black out on me. No screen image on boot, nor on an external screen. It boots all the way to windows, sound and all. It even connects to the Internet, but it remains as useful as a brick from now on. I tried to solve the problem on Google, but to my surprise most of the search results told me that this machine was doomed from the first boot sequence.

To me this is troublesome, as it was still very functional and in daily use, and I wont have the economy for a new one for at least another 6 months. It is my understanding that this is known as the Nvidia defect. Is there a way I can be sure? ASUS seems to be on refusing the issue, and I cannot find a list that shows my model is indeed faulty.

I want to build a small information document for the technician and selling company to review, so that I shorten this process as much as possible.

What I want to tell them is:

- If they are going to repair it, I want a guarantee that they do not replace it with another inherently faulty part. Otherwise I want another resolution, example a replacement or a refund.

What I don't wanna to do is:

- Threaten with lawsuits or similar actions. In my country Norway, we have possibly one of the worlds strongest consumer rights. Basically the seller has a right to attempt a repair on the same error/malfunction 3 times before I can demand a refund. Obviously, this is something I want to avoid because I have understood that this is only postponing the problem.

I am also wondering:

- What are the chances they can repair it? The model is way out of date now.

- What is a good replacement model in terms of spec? I understand prices are lower now than 3.5 years ago, and specs are way better, but still I have no clue to whats acceptable or not.

I'm going to research all my issues on my own, but I would appreciate any help you can give.

best regards
Ensio

Hello Ensio and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

Does this apply if the parts that they will be using were also potentially inherently defective? Does the retailer not have to give some assurances that the repair will be of a satisfactory standard?

That depends on what type of repair they try and undertake. They may try a reflow/reball in which case parts would not be a problem, though this type of repair is prone to failure.

Asus may have spare parts, though the chances that they will also be inherently defective will be quite high if the GPU has the same batch numbers.

I would certainly demand a guarantee if Asus insist on repairing it and I would also check the consumer laws in your country to see if there is any protection from the retailer repairing using defective parts.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

So today it decided to give me a screen image again... :b

I'm going to play some games on it like normal, and see how it responds.
