Hi, new to this forum, I purchased an Advent from PC world 9/2008 it failed 10/2010. I have gone through all the right proceedures the only difference is I didn't get an enginneers report, PC world did a check while I was in store. They told me it was not repairable and admitted that it was probably the Nvidia defect chip, they offered me £200 in vouchers towards a cost of new laptop taking off an amount for depreciation, I pointed out that if the laptop been working I could have got at least 6 more years use, they said the life of a that particuliar laptop would be between 4-6 years, they also wanted to charge me £30 for any data retrival from the hard drive!

I told them to put it all in writing even the bit about the fault. Should I take the £200 or carry on to get the whole cost of £419? It seems unfair that I should have to pay out so soon to buy another pc when it wasn't my fault!

Hello Sam and welcome to our forum.

Well it is good news that the person you spoke to actually admitted to the inherent defect in your laptop so well done to him.

You would be amazed at the number of retailer who will never admit to the defect - even if it presented to them in black and white - ad will only ever offer a refund as "a gesture of goodwill".

You have asked whether or not you should accept the £200. In order for me to advise you correctly please would you let me know the date you purchased the laptop, them amount you paid and the date that you reported the fault to PC World.

Once I have this information I will be able to calculate your refund.

It does look like you are going to reach a painless resolution so that is excellent. :!

Hi Paul, I don't know if you recieved my last message but I purchased laptop 9/2008 it failed 10/2010. I sent a letter to Dixons 10/2010. I paid £419 plus £70 for the microsoft office package.

Hello Sam,

If we were to base the life expectancy at five years, then judging by the information you supplied the minimum refund you should be offered is £244.42 plus any consequential losses.

If we were to base the life expectancy at six years, which is the Statute Of Limitations from bringing a claim nd is the length that a number of retailers are using, then the minimum refund amount should be £273.51.

Unfortunately you would not be able to claim the £70 for the software package as the retailer will probably state that you should have made a backup of it or that you should still have the original install disks.
