Hi,

My daughter and I bought an Advent 5401 from PC World in 2008 and recently when she tries to boot it up the screen is half grey and white.

I have done a search for any problems and it appears that in 2008 Nvidia manufactured and released defective Nvidia 8400 M GS graphic cards in laptops.

Does this sound like the same issue and if so what do I need to do about it please?

Hello Steve and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you have been experiencing with your latop.

You are quite correct regarding the 8400 GPU and the problems you have described sound like manifestations of the defect.

I have a few questions to see if you will be able to pursue a claim.

1) Can you prove purchase? (Till receipt or credit/debit card statement)
2) How did you pay? (If you paid by credit card you have extra protection)

That is basically it. If you can prove purchase then you are on your way. If you paid by credit card then the card company is jointly liable with the retailer for the fact that your laptop is inherently defective.

There is a step by step guide on this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

The key to success is persistence. They may try to fob you off but if you stand your ground then you will succeed.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Please keep us updated on your progress.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul and thanks for your response.

So the answer to your question is I have a bank statement which shows the transaction to PC World from my bank. However I am not with that bank anymore although that should not affect the issue I would think.

The card it was paid with was a Visa debit card and in the past I have made a claim through Visa for concert tickets etc that I have lost and they have honoured it.

I will try to claim and see what happens.

Thanks again for your help.

Regards

Steve Morrris

The bank statement is all you need and the fact that you are not with the bank anymore doesn't matter. All that the statement is needed for is to simply prove that you have purchased that laptop from them for a particular amount of money.

Good luck with this stage of your claim.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Hi Paul,

I have received a letter today from PC World and they have given me a reference number and requested that I call them. I have done this and after they managed to find me on their system they have asked me to take the laptop into the branch that I bought it from which is local and take to the letter with me. Their Engineer will then call the case officer who will tell him to check it over and confirm what they think is wrong.

So I am writing this reply just to check that it will be fine to leave it with them. I will of course obtain a receipt from them too. I have also taken lots of photo's of it as well.

Thanks again for your help so far.

Hello Steve,

I would not leave the laptop with them but would go to their store and request that they inspect the laptop in front of you.

These guys are not very technical and the only test they seem to do is the switch on test. In other words they will switch the laptop on and if there is no image or the image is corrupt then they will confirm the defect. Very technical!

There is no need for them to need to hold onto your laptop as virtually every other customer has been able to wait whilst they do their diagnosis.

At least then you will be offered a resolution on the spot.

What do you think?

Best wishes

Thanks Paul, I will relate to you the ongoing saga as it unfolds.

I have to say though I was expecting more resistance than I have. They have been very kind and cooperative so far. Let's see how it develops.

I have been to PC World and they have confirmed and contacted the person that I am dealing with at customer resolution team. He has called me to make an offer but the offer was for £229.00 only so I have refused it. He said that it was their final offer although they have not made an offer prior to this.

Do I need to still obtain an Engineers report and take it to the next stage?

Incidentally the guy rang me back as I was writing this and made an offer of £270.00 and again I refused and informed him that I require the full amount of the laptop or a replacement laptop. He sad that used to be the case but not now. I said we will see but thanks for your help so far.

Hello Steve,

If you can let me know the exact date of purchase then I will calculate what you should receive as a refund.

Unfortunately you will probably not get a 100% refund as their offer will take into account usage.

If you can let me know I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul,

My bank statements notes the bank transaction as 24/06/08 and next to the item it states 21/06/08. So I guess the earlier date would be the correct one.
