hello i am new to this site but would like to explain what i have done so far with a problem i have with 2 advent 5401 laptops that both white screened on me within 7 days of each other. They were purchased at the same time from pc world in guildford.I downloaded the standard letter that i got from your website and finally got a reply after 10 days asking me to take the laptops to the manager in the guildford branch of pc world to be checked for a defect and that if confirmed they would remedy this.Having read your website I got an independent view from a local computer repair shop and they confirmed that there was a defect in the graphics chip for both my laptops.Question i have is what to do next.Should i contact pc world in guildford and tell them they are not to look at my laptops and that a computer repair shop has confirmed the probelm??
Please let me know what you think i never realised how much i depended on my laptops till now and as it stands at the moment i have no way of retrieving my data of either laptop.
many thanks
phil

Have a good look through the link below and it will explain the correct procedure, then you should allow PC World to inspect your laptops ( if they still wish) under the proviso that it is an inspection only and not a repair!

My advice would also include you checking with Paul ( site admin) that your local engineers reports are detailed enough.

Good luck

Ralph

Hello Phil and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems that you are experiencing with your laptops.

Did the engineer that you visited give you an engineers report that states that the laptops are inherently faulty?

This is very important as it is the key to what will help you to reach a positive resolution.

PC World are quite within their rights to inspect the laptops to confirm the findings of the engineer, but you should tell them that under no circumstances should they repair the laptops and that their only instructions from you is to confirm that they agree with the findings of the engineer.

If they refuse to do this and state that they want to repair the laptops then you should refuse this on the grounds that there are no reliable parts available. If PC World insist on providing a repair then you should tell them that you want a written guarantee that states the parts being used are 100% free of the Nvidia defect.

You should also ask them for the part number of the mainboard that they intend to use in the repair.

If they refuse either request, which they probably will, then you would be well within your rights to reject any offer of a repair.

The most important thing though is the report that the engineer gave you and the contents therein.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Please keep us updated on your progress.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Dear Paul,

I am so glad that I came accross your site before doing anything with regards to my Advent 5401 laptop.

It fires up, but the screen is at first grey, and then goes to half grey, half black, and then goes black (although is clearly on). Having read some brief posts on this site, I presume I can presume that my laptop is suffering from the same problem???

If so, I will follow the step by step guide.

Cheers

Duncan

Hello Duncan and welcome to our forum.

This was one of the reasons I set this forum up - to help people like yourself who may pay for a repair to their laptop or worse - may have thrown it away and purchased another so to that end I am also glad you have found us.

The problem you describe is one of the manifestations of the defect.

Your laptop contains an Nvidia 8400 GPU and is one of the most prolific of the faulty GPU's. Some IT news sources have been quoted as saying that "all 8400 and 8600 GPU's are bad. Period!".

The chances therefore are very high that your laptop is indeed inherently defective so you will have recourse against the retailer.

If you follow my advice in the step by step guide then you will reach a positive resolution.

If you have any questions or if you need any help or advice then please let me know.

The key to success is persistence. Be firm. be polite, be persistent and you will succeed.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul
