Hello, we bought an Acer Aspire 7763g laptop from PC World in February last year for £550. It stopped working last week, it wouldn't boot up or charge. It is completely dead. I've taken it to a shop I trust and they said that they can't work out what the fault is. They think it is something to do with the motherboard but now sure what. It'll cost £250 just for the new motherboard. We can't afford to fix it. Does this now become an expensive ornament or can we take it back to Pc World? Sorry if this is just repeating previously asked questions. I am slowly making my way through the forum.
Thanks
Cinders

Hello Cinders and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

When you say that the laptop is completely dead and will not charge are any of the LED's lit when the charger is plugged in?

When you press the power on button do any of the LED's illuminate?

It wouldn't cost you anything like £250 to repair and even if it were not the defect then the most you would pay for a repair from ourselves would be £65 which includes the collect and return carriage.

If you can let me know about the LED's then I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi, nothing lights up. It worked fine then in the space of a couple of days it crashed. It would start up then completely freeze. I started it in safe mode to do a scan and it'd freeze there. I did a system restore that didn't help then it wouldn't switch on. At first the charging light would work and the led at the bottom but now nothing. I have had it to 2 shops. The first was local but I didn't trust them so I tool it to the guy I do trust. They both said it was a motherboard issue. The 2nd shop said that normally they can diagnose the bad part and just replace that and not the whole motherboard. I'm waffling so I'll shut up now!!
Thanks
Cinders

Hello Cinders,

We perform a large number of board level repairs here so it would be no problem repairing your laptop.

If there are no LED's on your laptop then it does not sound like the Nvidia defect but more like component failure.

If you would like us to repair your laptop then the cost, including the collect and return carriage, would be £65.

If it transpired that the laptop could not be repaired then all you would pay is £20 to cover the cost of the carriage.

Would this be to your approval?

Best wishes

So how do you diagnose the correct part? I'm only asking as that is what the guy I went to said he would do but they couldn't isolate the faulty bit. I'm not sure what to do as I can't afford to keep throwing money at it on the of chance it may be fixed. I went into PC World and they told me it would be £140 for a new motherboard.

Hello Cinders,

We have all the right test equipment here including test meters and we repair laptops on behalf of a number of independent computer stores so we are adept at bench level repairs.

I am so confident that we will be able to repair your laptop that I will make you this offer; If we cannot repair the laptop then I will not charge you for the collect and return carriage.

I am that confident that we will be able to repair it.

I cannot be more fairer than that.

At least then you do not stand to be out of pocket should we in fact be unable to repair your laptop.

What do you think?

Beat wishes

Hi Paul, we would like you to look at our laptop if that's ok? It's just sat there mocking us with it's inability to work. Do we bring the laptop to you? We live in Bingley which is about 5 miles from Bradford or do you arrange collection? Thanks for your time

Hello Cinders,

Well, you can either bring the laptop to us or we can arrange collection from you.

If you would like us to arrange collection then please do the following.

1) Please go to http://www.lapcure.co.uk/register.php

Complete the registration page and then verify your email address.

2) Once you have done that then login to the site and click on the "Add a job" link.

Fill in details about your laptop and then once you are sure the details are correct please save the record.

Once you have done that the courier will be booked to collect the laptop the next business day.

We use TNT for the collect and return carriage.

Please ensure that laptop is securely boxed with sufficient packaging to withstand transit to ourselves.

Once you have booked your laptop in I will email you with the label to place on the box.

You will be updated regularly as to the progress of your laptop through our system.

If you have any questions then please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul, thanks again for looking at the laptop. We seem to have a knack of buying electrical items that don't like living past 2 years. Is it alright if I collect the laptop in the morning? It'll be before 10am. I rang PC World and I was told that for £50 they would collect the laptop and repair it and that as it was only 15 months old he thought it highly unlikely I'd have to pay for it repairing. He said that if it was a manufacturing fault the £50 would be refunded. Do I go along with this? I'm reluctant to trust them after reading about other issues on here.
Hopefully I'll see you tomorrow,
Thanks again,
Cinders
