I have a customer's Aspire 8920 with no display on the screen(or external monitor) but which seems to have all the necessary lights on. It is fitted with an Nvidia 9500m GS graphics chip. Have you seen any issues with this one?

Hello Alfaro,

No, I have not tested that model of laptop but there is a wealth of evidence on the net.

You will obviously have to perform further tests in order to prove conclusively the cause of the problem but the outlook is bleak.

Have you tried all the obvious such as memory, CPU, removing wireless card, hard drive and DVD?

Best wishes

We've reflowed the gpu and it's started up but the colours are a bit off. It might need doing again. No sign of overheating though...

Hello Alfaro,

Are you trying to repair the laptop or prove the presence of the defect?

If you are trying to repair it then I have to say that reflowing the GPU will not be long lasting as is sure to fail again.

If the colours are still a bit off then yes, it may need refowing again.

The fact that the laptop is not overheating does not necessarily mean that the defect is not present, not every instance of failure involves the laptop overheating to a considerable or noticeable degree.

Good luck with the 2nd reflow.

Best wishes

The customer wanted me to try and repair it against my advice but the risk is theirs...

I'll let you know what happens tomorrow..

Have you seen any 9500m gs chips affected with the Nvidia fault?

Only once, and that was in an Asus G1S.

This laptop came in with a blank screen. Reworking the GPU made the laptop spring back to life which proved either the GPU or the BGA grid was defective.

After testing the laptop for just 15 minutes the temperature reached 92c before the laptop promptly failed again.

Best wishes

Did the customer manage to get a result from his retailer as a result?

Hello Alfaro,

To be honest I am not sure what happened in this case.

The customer never reported back so I am unsure. I would say that if they had encountered problems or a brick wall then they would have been back in touch.

I would say in the case of the 9500 GPU that it is more likely to be the BGA grid rather than the GPU itself.

Best wishes

Well, the Acer 8920 has failed again with the same fault. I got somebody else to reflow the Nvidia 9500m chip a few months ago to see what they could do with it but it seems that this laptop is doomed..

Have you seen any other examples of this model or Nvidia chip with this type of failure since I last posted on here?
