After reading lots on this forum I decided to tackle Comet about my acer aspire 7720g brought from Laskys.
I brought it in Dec 2007. It often suddenly shut down on its own and the screen would become big pixilated colours. I sent laskys a letter before action (taken from this forum).

Comet replied by phone asking for the order number which I supplied.

Comet are now saying (today) they have been in contact with Acer and my model is not affected by 'this problem' and so could not help.

Is this true? is it time for an engineers report?
Is my laptop too old?
Thanks Matt

Hello Matt and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

When you say it will not start any more are there any LED's illuminated when the charger is plugged in?

When you press the power button do any of the LED's illuminated?

This is quite important as it could be your laptop has failed for other reasons.

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Hello Matt,

If there are no LED's on the laptop then the problem could be due to component failure.

There is a fault that occurs in your model of laptop that I have seen numerous times and that is related to the DC jack.

Normally the DC jack is soldered to the mainboard but in your model of laptop the DC jack is off-board.

Occasionally the cable connecting to the jack fails at the solder point. A quick resolder job would fix that.

If the above is not the cause of the problem then there could be a blown component, though at this stage I would only be guessing as to the cause.

With the Nvidia defect the LED's would still illuminate but the display to the LCD would be garbled or would be non-existent.

You stated that the graphics were garbed prior to the laptop failing completely. It could be that your laptop has two faults.

The non-powering fault would have to be repaired first before you could proceed with a claim for a defective laptop.

If you would like me to take a look at your laptop then please let me know.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Best wishes

many thanks for that info. Quick solder job sounds a lot less hassle and expense that a blown component! How much would it cost to repair?- that is if it is that of course!
cheers matt

Hello Matt,

The cost to repair your laptop would be £65 which includes the collect and return carriage.

If when I get your laptop it is only a solder job and after completing that job it transpires that there is also a defect with the GPU as you have described, then I will produce your report and will not charge you for the solder job.

If it is component failure then I will advise you when I receive your laptop and you can decide at that point whether to proceed or not.

If you decide not to proceed or if the laptop cannot be repaired, then all you would pay for is the carriage, which is £20.

I hope the above is to your approval.

If you have any questions then please let me know.

Best wishes
