Hello everyone,

My laptop recently packed up after 3 years which was pretty devastating as you know. I was ready to write it off too until this website gave all of the info I needed to fixing the problem (hopefully) so a big thank you for this.

The laptop has always ran very hot then out of the blue the screen died. I did how ever manage to hook it up to a monitor for a short while which was enough to confirm it was a graphics problem as the resolution was running in some VGA 8bit mode! It won't display anything anywhere now.

I've been in touch with Tesco Direct and Tim (he wouldn't give me his surname) said under no circumstances will Tesco replace the item and that I should take it up with Acer as they will repair the machine if the problem is as well documented as I said it was.

I asked for their head office address (In Dundee, does that sound about right?) and now plan to take Step 2 but before I do I needed to ask. Even though my laptop has many of the symptom's recognized here as a defective Nvidia chip do I need to be certain it was from a particular batch before continuing?

Thanks
Roger

Hello Roger and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

That is absolute baloney and you should take no notice of what they say.

It infuriates me when these retailers have staff manning the customers services phones who have absolutely no idea of the laws regarding the Sale Of Goods Act. It is always the retailers responsibility to resolve issues such as this and it is NEVER EVER the responsibility of the manufacturer, unless of course you purchased directly from them, which you didn't.

No, the chances are quite high that your laptop is indeed inherently defective and there is no need or point in determining the batch number of the GPU. In any event, your laptop contains an 8400 GPU which is one of the more prolific of the defective chips so again, the chances are that this is indeed defective.

According to members of this forum, Tesco can be a tricky company to deal with and they will probably try to fob you off.

Please don't let them, stand your ground, be persistent and you will succeed.

The law is on your side and if your laptop is indeed inherently defective then you really cannot lose.

I hope the above helps.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hello again,

I've been reading an earlier thread that dealt with Tesco and it appears that there is a standard process where you send Tesco an out of warranty form and then they reply with a 'Gesture of goodwill' amount between £152 and £160.

So considering I will most likely have to undergo the same path plus the time it will take to do this. Do you think it ok to just send a letter before action letter to their head office instead?

Thanks
Roger

Hello Roger,

You could just send the letter before action to their head office. The template letter can be found here:- download/letter_before_action.doc

You should download that, edit it with your details and send it to Tesco's head office address.

Please remember to send the letter via recorded delivery and please ensure that you keep a copy of the letter and postal receipt.

If after seven business days you have not received a response then you should proceed onto the next step in the step by step guide.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul
