Hi, I've been reading all your posts with much interest and decided to take action after my Acer Aspire 7003Wsmi (bought from Tesco Direct 4 years ago) died a couple of weeks ago. It had been experiencing a black screen intermittantly for a while, and then finally decided to totally give up displaying a picture on the screen. I tried the external monitor to no avail. I then had it checked by an independant computer reapirer who confirmed it was the GPU (a nvidia Geforce Go 6100) at fault, and that to repair he would have to replace the whole mainboard.

I then used your letter before action with the engineers report I asked him for and sent this to Tesco.
2 Weeks later, I receive this strange letter which looks a bit different from all the others I have seen sent back from Tesco.

So what should I do now?! I thought the sale of goods act means my contract is with Tesco - should I send an email to Acer anyway? I have a feeling they'll just tell me it's out of warranty and they can't help me.
Or should I send a reply back to the customer services dept in Dundee?

Thanks for your help
Michael

Hello Michael and welcome to our forum.

You are quite correct when you state that your contract is with Tesco and not Acer and so it should be Tesco that deals with this.

Furthermore, the company that they have referred you to, Infoteam, as is evidenced in the email reply address, is simply a third party repair company and is not Acer at all.

Any repairs that concern the Nvidia GPU should come with the written guarantee and if Tesco are either unwilling or unable to provide that guarantee then you should refuse such an offer.

I would get back in touch with Tesco and would request from them two things:-

1) The written guarantee as detailed on this forum
2) The part number of the part that will be used to repair your laptop

I have to say tough that with your laptop being four years old you would only receive between 1/5th and 2/5ths of your money back, which is not a lot. It could be that in your case a repair would be the better option considering the refund will not be enough to purchase a replacement.

What do you think?

Best wishes

Hi Paul,

I've just been back in touch with Tesco speaking to someone from head office, she said they will not be taking any further action until Acer have had a look at my machine. I told her that I provided them with an engineers report so I have proved its faulty and that Acer's report could well be biased but she insisted they cannot do anything until Acer have looked at it, so I had to agree, she said this would be free of charge. She also said that if it was inherantly faulty then the fault would have manifested itself before 4 years, which I said was rubbish but couldn't think of anything else to say! She also said they cannot offer a replacement or refund without Acer looking at it, when I know they have done before.

I'll let you know when Acer reply, I'm not impressed with their attitude but can't seem to get through to them.

Thanks
Michael

Hello Michael,

Talk about banging your head against a brick wall :b

Absolute baloney!

The time to manifestation depends on a number of factors including customer usage patterns. A laptop that was used heavily would be more likely to fail sooner than a laptop that has had light usage, though that does not always follow.

Please ensure that you place a notice on the laptop that states "DO NOT REPAIR" and please make sure that you tell Tesco that under no circumstances should they repair the laptop without consulting you first.

It will be interesting to see what Acer's repair company say. Remember, this is not Acer that will be inspecting your laptop as they have led you to believe but a third party repair company.

I would make sure, before you send the laptop, that they will not attempt a repair.

Best wishes
