Hi, I 'm new to forum and not really sure if it's necessary to start new topic. Don't really know but I have Acer 5920g with Nvidia Geforce 8600m GS with 256mb dedicated memory. 2 weeks ago laptop would not start, changed a hard drive and installed new Windows 7 but when it starts it takes ages and I have green stripes on the screen with acer logo. My friend who repairs laptops says it's graphic card as he could not install the drivers or something (no device?). He also serviced my laptop (put new thermal paste and stuff) to exclude overheating due to dust.
Laptops starts but with minimal graphic settings and it takes ages to start it, still when it starts I have green stripes on acer logo. I have already sent a letter to laptops direct saying that I believe I have nvidia defect laptop. I bought this laptop 4 years ago. Thanks

That sounds a lot like what happened to my Dell - the glitched graphics on the boot screen are one of the signs of the defect. Here's hoping you can get it all resolved quickly ^_^

If a product is inherently defective then the warranty status is totally irrelevant.

There have been numerous successful claims against Laptops Direct and so you should not let them just fob you off.

Good luck with the next steps and if you need any advice then please let me know.

Best wishes

Ok, I think I messed everything up, I thought I would check that graphic card myself, the guy who serviced my laptop replaced thermal pad by thermal paste and I decided to go back to thermal pads. IT WORKED!!! Now my laptop is working but I checked temp and when put under stress it goes up to 91 degrees (Celsius) laptops gets quite hot but not sure if its ok? Could someone help me? My graphic card chip is g86 so it belongs to THOSE affected. When I don't play (idle) it shows around 60 degrees. I'm bit confused now. :c
Thanks for previous replies

Hello Pokeros,

Your laptop may be working now but that will probably be short lived. 91 degrees is way too high and is not far
off the boiling point of water.

I would say that you have a matter of days, maybe weeks, before it fails again.

It was probably on the fringes of failure before but hasn't totally failed.

Keep using it and time will tell.

Best wishes

Thanks for you reply, Paul. Will do. At least I got the reply from laptopsdirect and next time I will just send the last letter before court action. The last question I have got, becuase my chip is located on separate graphic card would I just need a new graphic card (like ATI or something)? The might offer a replacement, where do I stand if it happens?
Thank you so much, you do a great job here. I might contact you when my chip fails again (soon probably) ;)

Hello Pokoros,

Laptops Direct cannot offer to repair your laptop by using an ATI card as that would change the laptop specification from the one you purchased and would be a retro step.

When they are not defective the Nvidia GPU's are the best in the world and, in my opinion, no other manufacturer comes close.

So there is no way you would want a repair to be undertaken using anything other than a non-defective Nvidia card.

If they cannot supply this then the laptop should not be repaired and only a refund or replacement should suffice.

Thank you for your kind words in your post, much appreciated.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Hi, Thank you for your last reply. My laptop still working... I managed to finish Call of Duty World at War :D (the game stopped few times though) Although it's working if I sent this laptop to you would you be able to establish the defect and provide certificate. I want to get it sorted if possible. Thanks
