Good news, very good news, as of 2 months ago, after a problem with letters getting lost in the post, Dell have given me a cheque to the value of €900, the refund was calculated on the basis I had the laptop for 3 out of a possible 6 years and then all my court fees, engineer reports as well as any software licenses that were on the laptop such as anti-virus.

I did not go to the courts as the offer was reasonable (even though they made a previous offer that was ridiculously low and did'nt even cover court fees and lot), although it was an uphill drawn out battle, partly my own fault for not being quicker with responses. Other people in Ireland may wish to go all the way but at the time, I needed the money so it was another reason I settled.

Dell were quick to settle and indeed it was the quickest part of the claims, so credit to them there compared to other manufacturers considering I got the cheque a week after i settled! So fair play lads!! For anyone else I would advise you to try and respond quickly unlike me and it will make the process easier and quicker but be careful on your wording as I'm sure every word will be scrutinised.

I would like to thank Paul and all the Admin team here, there is not many people out there who, without hesitating, would help so many people every day fight a wrong. My thanks to you guys, keep it up, you've no Idea the difference your making especially in though times like this. The refund I got was very welcome! I wish you the very best for the future and to everyone else keep fighting the battle no matter now bloody it gets, cause the war is far from over!

Are you suffering any of the above problems with your laptop?

Even if your laptop is not a HP do your recognise one of these faults?

If so then STOP!!! Don't pay for that laptop repair. Your laptop probably contains one of the defective Nvidia chips and you could claim for a refund/replacement from the retailer where you purchased it.

All the help and advice on this site is free.

Should the retailer request that you obtain an independent engineers report on your laptop then we can help with that also.

As you may be aware Comet have now ceased trading. This is not good news if you have purchased from them.

If you paid by cash or debit card then unfortunately you will not be able to make a claim against Comet, though you may be able to make a claim against the manufacturer.

If you paid on credit or by a credit card then you would be able to pursue a Section 75 refund from the credit card company as the card company is jointly and severally liable with the retailer if the goods in question are inherently defective.

Here you will find a couple of useful programs to test your laptop.

The first, GPU-Z will report the temperature of your Nvidia GPU.

The other, Rthdribl, is a program that will stress test your Nvidia GPU (if it is still working)

There is also a copy of the template "letter before action" that you can download to send to the retailer.

Did you pay by Credit Card? If so, there are a couple of template letters available that you can send to the card company.
